# Island Transportation Puzzle with student responses

These four islands are located in an ocean as part of a chain of islands.

• The islands are not real close, but they are closer to each other than any other land.
• People have traveled among them by boat for as long as they can remember.
• Air travel is available for some of the islands, but the travel information available is confusing.

### Below is some information. What can you figure out from it?

Between implies a connection from one to the other. Meaning travel is possible both ways.

1. One brochure says planes travel from Island Cyll to Island Dyll.
2. Another brochure says that there is no way to travel by air between Island Ayll and Island Byll.

### Use these two clues to answer this question, before reading the next clue.

A. Can people go by airplane between Island Byll and Island Dyll?
Explain your answer.

### Suppose another brochure is found. It says:

People can travel by air between Island Byll to Island Dyll.

### Now use all of the information to answer the following questions.

B. Can people go by airplane between Island Byll and Island Cyll?
Explain your answer.

C. Can people go by airplane between Island Ayll and Island Cyll?
Explain your answer.

## Student answers

### Chris

A. Can’t tell from the two brochures.
I don’t know why you can’t go. It doesn't say.

B. Yes
They can go from Byll to Cyll to Dyll

C. Can’t tell
Can’t go from Ayll to Byll and don’t know if can go from Ayll to Cyll.

### Dee

A. Can’t tell from the brochures.
There was no information given for the two.

B.       Yes
They can fly from Cyll to Dyll, have a lay over, and catch a plane from Dyll to Byll.

C.       No
It said that you can’t go from Ayll to Byll and there is no information about a flight from Cyll to Ayll only Cyll to Dyll.

### Fran

A. Can’t tell from the brochures given.
The two clues don’t give any information about those two islands.

B. Yes
They can go from Byll to Dyll and then to Cyll, even though there is not a direct flight.

C. No
If they could go from Cyll to Ayll, then the people on Byll could go first to Dyll, then to Cyll, and then on to Ayll. But this contracts the brochure that says there is no way to travel by air between Byll and Ayll.

### Trav

A. Can’t tell from the two brochures.
The two clues don’t give any information about those two islands.

B. Yes
They can go from Byll to Dyll and then to Cyll, even though there is not a direct flight.

C. No
If they could go from Cyll to Ayll, then the people on Byll could go first to Dyll, then to Cyll, and then on to Ayllj. But this contracts the brochure that says there is no way to go by air between Byll and Ayll.

### Daniella

A. Can't tell from the two brochures.
They could if there was a landing strip on Byll.

B. Yes
Because planes fly from Cyll to Dyll or vice verso and from Byll to Dyll and vice versa. Therefore all have landing strips.

C. No
If they go from Ayll to Cyll, then the people on Byll could also go to Dyll, then to Cyll, and then on to Ayll. But this contradicts the brochure that states you can't go by air from Byll to Ayll. Further, if it is possible to fly to all three islands, then it is also NOT possible to fly from any of the three to Ayll, because if it was, then it would also be possible for the other two via an indirect route.

### Noreen

A. Yes
If the trip from Cyll to Dyll includes stopping on Byll. The clues only state that one cannot go by plane between Ayll and Byll. The flights need not be direct.

B. Yes
Can go by way of Dyll

C. Can't tell.
There is not enough information. Can only go by boat.

### Barbie

A. Can't tell from the two brochures.
There is nothing about routes from Byll to Dyll.

B. Yes
If you can go from Cyll to Dyll and Dyll to Byll, Cyll to Byll should also be possible.

C. No
If you can go from Cyll to Byll, but not Byll to Ayll, you should not be able to go from Cyll to Ayll.

### Joe

A. No
Byll and Dyll are not far enough apart.

B. Yes
They are a long distance apart.

C. No Not far enough apart.

### Sara

A. Yes
Because the people can go west from Island Dyll because the plane has to fly back sometime.

B. No
I am presuming both directions doesn't include from Byll to Cyll.

C. Yes
Because Island Cyll is not next to Ayll.
