Ideas to assess understanding of fractional values:
Beginning
- Use fraction term (half) as parts, but not equal parts.
- Recognizes fractions (half, third, fourth) as equal parts of a whole.
- Accurately uses fractions (half, third, fourth) as part of a single object (shape, ... ) in real contexts.
- Recognizes fractions (half, third, fourth) are equal parts or equal groups of a larger group.
- Accurately matches area and set models to fractional values.
- Can add and subtract fractions (half, third, fourth) of equal parts and common denominators.
- Accurately uses fractions (1/10 ... 1/2) as part of a single object (shape, ... ) in real contexts.
- Accurately creates area, set, volume, and length or measurement models that represent fractional values (1/100 ... 1/2).
- Recognizes the value of one can change with the situation.
- Recognizes mixed fractions as a sum of whole number(s) and fractional number.
- Recognizes models and changes equivalent fractions (1/1000 ... 1/2) to different equivalent forms, including one.

Beginning
Counts parts without regard of having equal parts of a whole when determining fractional values.
Uses the idea of equal parts of a whole when determining fractional values and for performing operations with fractional values only for fractional values with equal numbers of parts making the whole.
Recognizes, when it is necessary, to determine equal parts for fractions with unlike denominators when comparing fractional values with different numbers of parts making the whole.
Recognizes the need of having equal parts for fractions (with and without unlike denominators) when performing operations with fractional values.
