Teacher role
Kelly is a sixteen-year-old tenth-grade student who has been diagnosed as learning disabled. He is the youngest of four children whose parents are in their late fifties. The family needs extra money and Kelly contributes by having a paper route. In addition, his parents have arranged a before-school job at a local cafe. The boy is disinterested in school work and always seems tired from his jobs. You are having a talk with Kelly to try and increase his desire to learn in school.

Student role - Kelly
You are a sixteen-year-old tenth-grade student who has been labeled learning disabled. You go to the resource room and feel that you will never be able to go on to school. Your parents say you might as well get out into the real world and learn how to work, since you will not be smart enough to go on to school and they could use the extra money. You are the youngest in the family, have three brothers, and your parents are in their late fifties. You have a paper route and work at a local cafe before-school. You are very proud of your work, because you know you are doing a great job and people tell you that very often. That does not happen in school.

Short term
- Talk with the student to try and allow them to acknowledge their actions.
Long term
- Meet with the parents to explain the students potential for learning and success in school.
- The school could enroll the student in a school work program that would schedule his work load around academics.
- Find times during school for the student to catch-up on the missed sleep.
