Teacher role
Maria is a nine-year-old fifth-grade student of above-average intelligence who recently transferred from a school in another state. From day one Maria has had problems adjusting. She does not keep her mind on her work, leaves much of her work unfinished, and is constantly out of her seat talking to other students. You have just noticed it again and reminded her of her work. She replies. "I know. I was going to finish it. I didn’t understand the assignment and I am just finding out what to do next." You approach her.

Student role - Maria
You are a nine-year-old fifth-grade student of above-average intelligence who recently transferred from a school in another state. You do not know any of the girls the way you did at your other school. You keep on talking to the other students hoping you can find a friend like Andrea or Ti. But the teacher keeps on nagging you about school work. Gheeze, you do more than you ever did at your old school and the teacher is not even satisfied. You believe friends are definitely more important than dumb old school work.

Short term
- Assign the student a welcome partner or group.
- Use cooperative learning groups.
- Speak with student to find what the student needs are and then try to meet them.
- To punish the student for their behavior would not allow them the opportunity to accept their behavior or being taught an acceptable behavior.
Long term
- Discuss possible future courses of actions with the principal, parents, and mother.
- Refer the parent(s) to a counselor or psychiatrist for family counseling.
- Have a meeting with parents, counselor, teacher, mother, and principal to determine the best for the student.
