iTunes Tutorial

Open iTunes:

-Click the iTunes icon in the Dock at the bottom of the screen. OR double click the system hard drive. Click “Applications.” Then double click “iTunes.”

Importing (Ripping) Music from a CD:

-Insert the CD to be recorded into the CD drive. Be patient while iTunes loads the CD.

-If songs and track information can’t be read from the CD, it will be retrieved from the internet, if internet connection is available.

-Song information will be displayed by title or track number.

-Right now the computer has read only the title and song names. Use the following steps to import the actual songs.

-Songs with a checkmark in the box to the left of the title will be imported.

-Songs on the list that don’t need to be imported can be deselect by clicking the box to the left of the song title.  This will remove the checkmark in the box.

-All songs can be selected or deselect by holding down the “Apple” key while selecting or deselecting any box.

-Click the iTunes import button at the top right of the iTunes screen to import the songs from the CD. The program will begin converting the CD’s songs into digital music files. There will be an orange circle with a moving wavy line to indicate the song that is currently being converted.  After a song is converted a green check mark will show up to the left of the song name.

-Now the music is stored in the computer. Click the Library icon on the left side of the screen. This will display all of the songs in the library.  The songs can be sorted and displayed in different ways by clicking the categories at the top.  Click the black arrow in each category to change listing from ascending to descending order and back. (Fields without information are listed first). The imported songs should be listed and can be accessed.

-To eject the CD, click the eject symbol to the right of the CD title in the left column.

Listening to Songs while Importing:

-To automatically play a CD while the songs are being imported, choose Preferences from the iTunes menu.  Click the import tab at the top of the screen that pops up. Click the box to the left of the “Play songs while importing.”  This puts a checkmark in the box.  To turn this feature off, click the box to remove the checkmark.  Click “OK.” 

-Any song from a playlist or the library can be played during importing by double clicking the name of that song.  You can pause the song or skip from one song to the next using the buttons at the upper left of the screen.

Playing a CD:

-Insert a CD into the CD drive

-Press the play button in the upper left hand side of the iTunes screen

Creating a Playlist:

-Click the plus sign at the bottom left of the screen OR choose “New Playlist” from the File menu

-Click in the box in the left column that says “Untitled” and type a name for the Playlist

-To add a single song to a Playlist, click the name of the song and hold down the mouse key. Drag the song over the name of the Playlist, and when the Playlist name turns gray, release the mouse button. 

-To add several songs adjacent to each other, click the first song desired. Hold down the shift key and click the last song desired, then release the shift key. Click any of the songs selected and hold the mouse key down. Drag the songs over top of the Playlist until the name of the Playlist turns gray and release the mouse button

-To add several songs not adjacent to each other, press the “Apple” key while clicking each desired song. Then Click any song that has been selected and hold the mouse key down. Drag the songs over top of the Playlist until the name of the Playlist turns gray and release the mouse button

To create a “smart” Playlist:

-Choose “New Smart Playlist” from the File menu

-Use the drop down boxes to select the criteria you’d like to use to make your Playlist. To limit the number of songs to be on the playlist, click in the box to the left of "Limit" to put a checkmark in the box. Then click in the box with 25 in it and erase 25. Type the desired number of songs to be on the playlist. To have live updating make sure there is a checkmark in the box to the left of "Live Updating." If there is not a checkmark in the box, click in the box to add the checkmark. Live updating means that as songs are added to the library, if a song fits the criteria for the playlist, it will be added to the playlist.

-Click “OK” when finished

Listening to a Playlist:

-Click the name of the Playlist in the left column

-Click in the box to the left of each song to be played so that the box has a checkmark in it

-Click the “Play” button in the upper left of the screen

To copy one Playlist to another:

-Click one Playlist and hold down the mouse button

-Drag the Playlist over top of the other Playlist

-When the other playlist turns gray, release the mouse button 

To Edit Song Info after it has been imported:

-Select the song by clicking it

-Choose “Get Info” from the File menu, or press the Apple key and “I”

-Change the info

-Click “OK”

To Find a song:

-In the left column, Click the Library or the Playlist to be searched

-Click the “Q” in the upper right of the screen

-Click the category to search under

-Type the information of the desired song. Songs that fit this information will be displayed

To Burn an Audio CD:

-Insert a CD into the computer to burn onto

-Select the playlist to be burned by clicking its name

-Click the “Burn Disc” button in the top right of your screen

-In the upper center of your screen iTunes will display the number of songs it will burn and the total duration

-Again Click “Burn Disc.”  A status message will be displayed in the upper center of the screen with the name of the song being burned.

-To cancel a burn in progress click the “X” button to the right of the name of the song.

To Delete a Song:

-Deleting a song from the Library will remove it from the Library and every placelist it is in. However, deleting a song from one playlist will not delete it from the library and any other playlists.

-Click the song name

-Hit the “Delete” button on your keyboard

-Click “Yes”
