Observation and properties Rubric

Observation Rubric

Pre operational Beginning Developing

Comprehensive

Uses animism and personification to explain an observation rather than describe what happened as an observation. (The air wanted to get out of the balloon. The balloon shrunk or got smaller)

Describes properties using their own senses.

Uses observations AS interpretations.

Uses simple "watch and see" approach to investigate. Doesn’t plan beyond initial observation.

Sees obvious properties or characteristics and identifies objects by them, but doesn't notice or look for detail.

Describes properties using all appropriate senses.

Describes observable changes in objects' properties or characteristics.

Uses observations to describe objects and events.

Can use various instruments to gather more detailed qualitative information about properties.

Can use various measuring instruments to collect quantitative observations.

Refines information to exclude false data.

Beginning to distinguish between observation and inference.

More active than passive observing; collecting quality, detailed, accurate, and consistent qualitative and quantitative observations.

Notices patterns, cycles, discrepancies, and can differentiate between observations and inferences.

Properties or characteristics Rubric

Pre operational Beginning Developing

Comprehensive

Uses animism and personification to explain rather than describe an object by its properties or characteristics. (The air wanted to get out of the balloon. the balloon was big and now it's small. The size of the balloon changed.)

Describes properties using their own senses.

Describes objects by its properties or characteristics.

Can list several properties of an object, and can explain how some objects can have similar properties and different properties or characterisitcs. Can't consistently explain how the property relates to the whole object, how the whole object relates to its properties, and how the properties relate to the other properties.

Identifies objects with the use of properties or characteristics.

Can explain how a property relates to an object and a group of objects, how the object or group of objects relate to its properties, and how the properties relate to the other related properties. (These are all small. Those are big. The property is size and all of the cars have different size. They are seperated by small, medium, or large.

Refines information to exclude false data.

More active that passive observing; quality, accuracy, and inconsistencies.

Notices patterns, cycles, discrepancies, and can differentiate between observations and inferences.
